Our Story

Since 1901 the Kindel Furniture Company has preserved an enduring heritage of craftsmanship, scholarship and authenticity. From inception, founder Charles J. Kindel had a vision to build the world’s finest furniture. Kindel has never wavered from this original vision.

The legacy of the Kindel family transferred ownership in 1964 when Kindel was purchased by John Fisher of Muncie, Indiana. The Fisher family has maintained family ownership for 50 years with a dedication and commitment to 100% American-made furniture. While other companies have sought lower cost methods and offshore production, Kindel held a standard for domestic work, and today handcrafts 100% of their furniture in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Only Kindel possesses a century of scholarship and experience gleaned from 113 years of “best of kind” design and superior execution. Whether to the exacting standards of the Winterthur Museum, the iconic designs of Dorothy Draper, or the architectural precision of the Robert A.M. Stern architects, Kindelʼs exceptional team of designers, engineers and artisans are dedicated to uncompromising craftsmanship and relevant design.

Relevant design has fostered Kindel’s ability to create custom furniture. Our bench made, workshop and “made to order” practices allow for adaptation of dimensions, wood species and functionality of our entire product line. Kindel’s custom capabilities are limitless.

It is with enormous pride that we build our furniture every day, using time-honored techniques reflecting a passion for the finest furniture in the world. A commitment to the details: bench assembly, hand-selected veneers, hand carving, hand-painted decoration, and hand finishing defines Kindel as a true, American, luxury brand.
